Epicurus Riddle Solved!

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?

Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

Ok.   Let’s break this down:

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent”

Of course He is able to prevent evil.  But who is causing the evil-man or God?

“Why doesn’t God feed starving children in Africa?”

How is it God’s fault, if a leader of a country doesn’t feed their OWN people?
Isn’t THAT what a leader of a country is SUPPOSED to do?
(God isn’t the leader of this country, so how is it HIS fault people are starving?.  Especially WHEN every country IS able to feed their own people? It’s the corupt leaders of these countries that are responsible for their OWN people starving-not God!)

“How Could God let someone be killed?”

How is it God’s fault, if someone kills another person?
(God didn’t kill the person.)

“Why was my baby brother killed in a car crash?”

How is it God’s fault when a driver runs another off the road & a child dies?
(God wasn’t driving either car.)

Why are you blaming God for what MAN is doing?

Man is simply not taking responsibility for his OWN actions, (once again), & is “passing the buck”, by blaming God for their problems!

If God stopped everything bad from happening, how would we grow?

Also:

Do you really think that God DOESN’T want us to learn how to adapt to various situations?  That we who DO know Christ Jesus, should never learn?  What kind of “loving” Father would that be?  Would you want YOUR father NOT to heach youi how to deal with unexpected situations?  If you are a father, would you not teach YOUR children how to deal with unexpected situations? That is not the God of the Bible, nor the God I know.  Knowing God, involves us trusting God to help us THROUGH unexpected stiations-NOT always avoid them or remove them!    If we always avoided them, we never WOULD grow!  We never WOULD learn! The job of a loving father is to TEACH his children-not let them remain ignorant & helpless!

Then we have this:

“Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.”

No He isn’t.

Man has not accepted responsibility for his own actions, ever since Adam & Eve refused to take responsibility for disobeying God’s command not to eat the fruit of that tree.  We can’t know God, until we take responsibility for our own actions & stop blaming God for what WE choose to do.WE & WE alone are responsible for our OWN problems–NOBODY ELSE!  Don’t you think that it’s time to stop “passing the buck?”

Also: there is NO PLACE in Scripture where God EVER says that nothing bad will ever happen!

Not one.

I need to say something about people accusing God of causing natural disasters.

God DID use nature in the OLD TESTAMENT.  But there is not ONE SINGLE REFERENCE in the NEW TESTAMENT!

NOT ONE!

There is NO ONE who can show me ONE SINGLE Scriptural reference in the NT, where God EVER used nature as punishment.  (The Book of Revelation, cannot be included, because those events haven’t happened yet.)

At least in much of the world:

Why are there hurricanes only one time a year?
Why do we have 4 seasons, that have been consistant for countless millenia?
Why do earthquakes only happen in certain parts of the world?

And on & on.

God has set nature in strict, UNCHANGING patterns, that have not changed for tens of thousands of years.

What happens is nature acting within the bounds that God has set.  If God hadn’t set these kind of controls, nature would run wild!  There would be hurricanes all over the globe.  Tornados occuring in every part of the world.  There wouldn’t BE regular seasons!  These are God’s controls that keep nature FROM running wild!

Then we have this:

“Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?”

From Man’s disobedience-Not God

Man CHOOSES to disobey God.
God doesn’t force ANYONE to obey OR disobey Him

Never has-never will.

This is CHOICE.

There WAS no evil in the Garden of Eden when God created it!
No deadly bacteria.
No deadly animals.
No disease.
No Sicknes.
Nothing EVIL or Bad,

as seen here:

The Bible clearly states that EVERYTHING that God ever CREATED, was created in these passages.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%201:1-31&version=NIV

There is not ONE SINGLE reference ANYWHERE in the Bible that God EVER created anything else after this.

If what you “say” God “created”, is not in this passage, then He did not create it.

It should also be noted, that there is NOT ONE SINGLE Biblical reference, where GOD says that man will EVER have a life with no problems, so those who accuse God of causing problems for us, has NO SCRIPTURAL BASIS WHATSOEVER for saying this!

And finally:

“Then why call him God?””

Because His IS-whether you want to believe it or not, does not change who God is.

God doesn’t change REGARDLESS of what ANYONE thinks about Him..

He IS the great “I AM”!

  1. When God does prevent evil, there is no way we can know because it didn’t happen except for the stories in the bible such as the flood and the destruction of the evil Canaanites and his mercy is often mistaken as cruelty.

Another solid point is that we cannot see the afterlife and the story of Lazarus and the Richman (Luke 16:21) shows us that eternity balances the scales of justice.

    • First you say is:

“When God does prevent evil, there is no way we can know because it didn’t happen”

      What?

“If God DID prevent the evil, how do YOU know that God acted to prevent that evil?”

I HAVE seen God prevent evil, since I came to know Him, in my prayers for other people. One can only only see this, if they know Christ in their own lives.

      Than you say this:

“Another solid point is that we cannot see the afterlife and the story of Lazarus and the Rich man (Luke 16:21) shows us that eternity balances the scales of justice.”

Eternity is a time period. How can a concept balance anything?

No. Scripture is very clear: What happens in our lives here on earth, is balanced by one & only one criteria-God’s Word, as seen here:

      “Matthew 12:36

      New International Version (NIV)

36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.”

This doesn’t include just words, but actions, as well. All shall stand before God, & account for how they dealt with what has happened in their lives.

Everything that happens in our lives, is a direct reaction to how man has reacted to whatever DOES happen in their lives, throughout the countless centuries since Adam & Eve.

I am sure you have heard of this theory:

“Every action has an equal & opposite reaction.”

How we react to that which happens in our lives, determines what our future will be like. Nowhere in the Bible has God EVER forced ANYONE to do anything. against their will.

Our actions & our actions ALONE determine how easy or hard our lives will be-NOT God.

We & we alone are responsible for everything that happens on this planet of ours-NOT God! Unless you can show me one shred of BIBLICAL proof that God ever forced anyone to do ANYTHING against their will, you have no case.

God lets us run our own lives-He will NOT interfere in them. Anything bad that happens is no one’s fault but our own.

And yes, we CAN see the afterlife. Right here:

      “1 Corinthians 2:8-10

      New International Version (NIV)

8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written:

      “What no eye has seen,
      what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
the things God has prepared for those who love him—

10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”

For those who actually KNOW Christ, this is God’s promise to us-an eternity with Him, that will be like nothing that we can even BEGIN to imagine, & better than anything we could even begin to hope for. This is the afterlife with our Lord & Savior, Christ Jesus.

This is the promise that all who know Him, are living for.

  2. Interesting thought of a mythical person who has all this power. If God knows everything before it happens then what would be the point of creating anything since he already knows the outcome. God is man made and religion was made to scare and control primitive people. In no way does nonsense like religion apply to intelligent civilized people in the twenty first century. The bible was just the Harry Potter book of those times when people would believe just about anything. I mean come on, some guy comes along and says I am the way and the life and people just believed him? He could feed a thousand with a single loaf of bread, turn water into wine, walk on water, heal the sick and raise the dead but he couldn’t handle three nails? Nice story! I bet if the bible was a new book just published, no one would believe it!

    • You are neglecting one thing:

God NEVER forced anyone to do anything.

      Man has CHOSEN to act!

Ever since Adam & Eve, God has held man accountable for his actions.

Adam & Eve were held accountable for their disobedience, & cast out of Eden.

Cain was held accountable for killing Abel, & exiled.

David was held accountable for his affair with Bathsheeba, & their child died.

Man’s actions, man’s choices, all have consequences.

The way the world is today, isn’t God’s fault-it’s mans!

Everything that has happened since Adam & Eve, is a consequence of man’s actions.

Jesus states that man is accountable for his words here:

      Matthew 12:36 (New International Version)

36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.

      Paul states:

      Romans 14:12 (New International Version)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

      Peter states:

1 Peter 4:5 (New International Version)

5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

The way the world is today is because of MAN’s Actions-there is no place in Scripture which even BEGINS to indicate that ANY of it it God’s fault.

Have you ever heard of the phrase:

“Every action has an equal & opposite reaction”?

Man’s ACTIONS have caused this world to become as it it is. There is NO EVIDENCE that you can show me, where it is God’s fault!

Man is responsible for the way the world is today-not God, & you have no proof that God is is anyway responsible for the condition of the world today.

Man & man alone must bear the blame for the world today!

      Blame man-NOT God!

When you can show me where God EVER forced nyone to do anything-Then & ONLY THEN will you have a case.
